Inserting Snippets into Topics

After you create or add snippets, you can insert them into any topic in your project. You can do this by using the Insert menu, which lets you search for a snippet, or you can simply drag an existing snippet from the Content Explorer.

How to insert a snippet into a topic using the Insert menu

  1. Open the topic.
  2. Place your cursor in the topic where you want to insert the snippet.
  3. Select Insert>Snippet. The Insert Snippet Link dialog opens.

  4. Select a snippet file to insert. You can do this in one of the following ways:
  5. Click OK. The snippet is inserted into the topic and is surrounded by brackets (if markers are turned on).

  6. Press CTRL+S or click to save your work.

How to insert a snippet into a topic by dragging it from the Content Explorer

  1. Make sure the Content Explorer is open. By default, the Content Explorer is located on the left side of the interface in an accordion structure with the Project Organizer, unless you have previously moved it and saved the new layout. You may have to click the Content Explorer bar to bring it into view.
  2. Open the Resources folder and then the Snippets subfolder, where you have stored the snippet you want to insert.
  3. Drag the snippet from the Content Explorer to the location where you want it in the topic and drop it.
  4. Press CTRL+S or click to save your work.

Note: You can insert a snippet within a snippet if necessary. To do this, simply open the snippet and then create a new snippet or insert an existing one.

Note: You can also import an existing snippet from outside your project.

Note: You can quickly insert a text hyperlink to a file (e.g., topic, image, snippet) in the Content Explorer. To do this, click and drag the destination file from the Content Explorer to the location in the topic where you want to insert it. As you drag the file into the topic, a vertical red bar acts as a guide to help you place the link in the topic. When you release the mouse button, the Insert Hyperlink dialog opens. You can modify any fields in the dialog (if necessary) and click OK to insert the hyperlink.
