Adding Search Filter Sets to Projects

A filter can be included in the search feature to let users narrow their search based on "concepts" that you have inserted into topics. Concepts are simply markers that you insert into topics that have some kind of relationship with each other. They are also used for inserting concept links into topics (such as the "See Also" link that you see at the bottom of this topic).

example

Let's say you are developing a Help system for an employee time-reporting software application. You might have a group of related topics (e.g., Creating a Time Sheet, Changing a Time Sheet, Deleting a Time Sheet), and you want users to be able to narrow their search in your online Help system so that the search engine only looks for content in those topics. So you might create a concept called "TimeSheets." You would then insert the keyword into each of those topics. After that, you would add a search filter set to your project and create search filters within that set, including one based on the concept called "TimeSheets." When users open the search feature in your Help system, they can select the "TimeSheets" filter to narrow their search to those topics containing that concept.

A search filter set file has an .flsfs extension and is stored in the Project Organizer under the Advanced folder.

How to add a search filter set to a project

  1. Select Project>Advanced>Add Search Filter Set.

The Add Search Filter Set dialog opens.

  2. In the Template Folders area, select one of the folders.

The Templates section to the right displays the search filter set templates contained in the folder you selected.

Click here to find out what templates are all about.

  3. In the Templates area, select a search filter set template.
  4. In the File name field, type a new name for the search filter set.
  5. Click Add.

The search filter set is added to the Advanced folder in the Project Organizer. The Search Filter Set Editor opens to the right, with an initial search filter entry shown.

Note: Search filters are available only with DotNet Help, WebHelp, WebHelp Plus, and WebHelp AIR output. They are not available with HTML Help or print outputs.

WHAT'S NEXT?

After you add the new search filter set, you need to insert concepts into topics (if you have not already done so). After that, you can create search filters based on the concepts that you inserted.
